Whether you know what you want to buy this holiday season, or you're not sure but are hoping to happen across a deal that would make a great gift, the internet is a huge and sometimes overwhelming place and you may not know where to start.
Here are some tips for where to go to find the best deals, at the holidays or at any time of year!
1. Be sure you're signed up to receive emails from your favorite cashback rewards programs. Cashback programs have a box you can click somewhere to opt out of their mailings, but during the holidays, these emails can be a tremendously helpful source of information on sales, coupon codes combineable with cashback, and limited time cashback increases. Be sure you have opted in to receive these promotional mailings during the holidays so you don't miss out! On most rewards programs, you'll find this option under My Account.
2. Several rewards programs have an option now to receive special deals from stores that you select yourself.
-
Ebates: Under My Ebates, Subscriptions, click the box to opt in to Shopping Offers (beta). They'll send special deals from your favorite stores, which you can select under the Favorite Stores link (also in My Ebates).
-
Upromise: Under My Account, Update Profile, page down to Communication Preferences. Click the top box, “Email me the Upromise weekly Online Shopping coupons and deals.” Then, click on My Deal Alerts (also under My Account) and you can choose your favorite stores and/or favorite categories of stores, and how frequent you'd like to receive alerts. (I choose Daily so I don't miss out on a short-term deal!)
-
MrRebates: Under My Account, Newsletter, be sure you've clicked the Subscribe option. Then, at the top of the page click the Coupons tab. Select Coupon Alerts by Email and add your favorite stores!
3. Sign up for newsletters directly at the websites of your favorite merchants. Sometimes stores will offer you an exclusive discount as one of their e-newsletter subscribers. They may be a better value than any other coupon code out there, but beware: they may invalidate cash back if you try to use them at a cashback site. If cashback > coupon code discount, go with the cashback without the code. Otherwise, you can try to combine them but don't be surprised if the cashback doesn't credit.
4. Become a fan on Facebook, or a follower on Twitter, of your favorite merchants. They also sometimes provide exclusive codes, freebies, or printable coupons to their social media fans.
5. Use product price comparison websites to help you find which store has the lowest price. The drawback to these sites is that they generally don't factor in coupon codes or cashback, but at least it gives you a place to start if you know what it is that you want. Many of them have guides to help you choose a new TV, Blu-Ray player, etc., if you're not sure what to look for.
Once you use the tool to find the lowest price, DON'T CLICK THROUGH THEIR LINK TO THE STORE! Doing so might place a cookie on your machine that would override your cashback reward. Just use the comparison site to find the lowest price...then clear your cookies and go to your cashback site to click through to the merchant's website. Examples of some of these comparison sites:
-
MagazinePriceSearch.com: Exactly what the name suggests. Many of the magazine stores listed do participate in cashback programs. Use the coupon codes listed on the rewards program instead of any you find on this site, otherwise you may not get cashback credit.
-
AllBookStores.com: Pretty self-explanatory again. You'll want to click the Total Cost column to sort by lowest price. Also, note that they include used book prices.
-
PriceWatch.com: Computers and computer components is their primary niche, though they've expanded to include other consumer electronics. Their results will include some smaller companies that don't participate in cashback rewards programs. If you've never heard of the seller, be sure you check ResellerRatings.com to find out if they're a reputable company.
-
Google Products,
Pricegrabber,
Shopzilla: These are general purpose price comparison tools that contain a huge variety of products. They may index different merchants, though, so it's worthwhile to check pricing at each one.
6. Try out Extrabux.com, the only site with a price comparison tool that not only factors in tax and shipping, but also figures in any applicable savings from available coupons and cashback. If you don't have a lot of time but you know exactly what product you want to buy, Extrabux does it all, something really unique that not even Microsoft was able to do with their recently-closed cashback site.
7. Sign up for deal-a-day sites and sample sale sites. They'll send you an email every day, or every few days (as new sales go live). You'll want to check out:
-
Groupon,
LivingSocial,
PlumDistrict, and
BargainBee. These are a one-
local-deal-per-day sites. Get discounted local gift certificates to give as gifts or use to buy gifts yourself, usually at half price.
-
DailySteals and
Dillyeo. These are one-
product-per-day sites with cheap daily deals on closeouts and discontinued items. Unsold products stay on the site until sold out. Similar is
Woot, which only offers one deal a day until it sells out...except during their Woot-Off marathon sales events. Read the fine print, though: some Woot products are refurbs.
- BeyondTheRack, Zulily, Ideeli, Totsi, and RueLaLa. These are more designer brand products, at deeply discounted prices. Zulily and Totsi focus more on kids, maternity, and new baby items. These sample sales sites usually run designer boutiques for a few days at a time.
8. Monitor the deal forums. There are some hard-core deal scouts out there on sites like FatWallet.com and SlickDeals.net. They post about ridiculously cheap finds so others can take advantage, but don't wait: these sites have millions of active members who jump on the bandwagon fast; deals often sell out fast once they hit these forums. You should also keep an eye out for early scans of Black Friday ads available on sites like BlackFriday.GottaDeal.com and BFads. Sometimes Black Friday prices will go live online ahead of schedule and you can swoop in to get them before they sell out.
